SAMAKANDA, THE WEB OF HOPE'S FIRST 'BIO-VERSITY ’
Meaning ‘peaceful hill’ in Sinhala, Samakanda is a more permanent version of the Village of Hope, a catalyst for The Web of Hope movement and the inspiration of one of the founders, the late Dr Colin Hudson (www.thewebofhope.org). Colin mobilised the Village of Hope to demonstrate sustainability role models from around the globe, presenting it as a parallel event to Rio+2, A UN summit held in Barbados in 1994.
By demonstrating working examples of role models abstracted from our database, Samakanda will provide living proof of sustainable lifestyle solutions, inspired by the natural ‘intelligence’ of biological systems. Modern permaculture concepts have been combined with traditional farming methods, like the inter-cropping and diversity seen in tropical forest gardens. Appropriate building technologies, like rammed earth and traditional thatch, incorporate solar technology and systems for harvesting rainwater. ‘Localisation’ mechanisms are improving livelihoods for local villagers employed on the project.
THE ‘BIO-VERSITY’ CONCEPT
Rather like a conventional ‘uni-versity’, Samakanda provides the space for a shifting population of teachers and students, who can then transmit knowledge through their own networks and thus seed the process of positive change. Courses range from permaculture design and earth building to yoga and ayurveda.

The twelve topics that form the Web of Hope taxonomy are applied to the twelve months of the year as a basic curriculum for the programme of monthly workshops, conducted for local communities as well as visitors.
